The bidi industry has employed more than 4 million people in this industry, majority are women from the rural parts of India. The archaic caste system has led a majority of them to categorise themselves mostly as Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Castes, MBCs in South India though some higher caste communities also roll bidis here. Tirupattur also has a small population of rollers from the Muslim community who engage in bidi rolling, and are mostly women again.
